Because of Winn-Dixie — Standee Display Contest
To celebrate the release of Because of Winn-Dixie in theaters, during the months of October 2005 through January 2005 we shipped out over 1,000 large movie standees (9' x 4.5' cardboard movie posters) to public and school libraries across the country. Those who received a standee were asked to enter a standee display contest. The contest was to create a Because of Winn-Dixie display incorporating the movie standee. We wanted students and library visitors to be involved in creating a display to encourage kids to read. Those who participated took a picture of their display and submitted it to us at Walden Media.
Thank you to all who entered. We received many wonderful entries - too difficult to judge and too many to post all of them. Said one Walden employee, "How can you say 'no' to a picture of smiling kids?!!" After much deliberation and debate, here is our winner and a few of our other favorites:

We decided to incorporate many stuffed animals into our display to represent the animals in Gertrude's Pet Store. We also constructed Gloria Dump's bottle tree and decorated it with many colorful painted bottles. The display is located near the door, so students can sit and read while waiting on their partners.

Our display is a ”living display.” Students of various ages are live models for the display. As each class enters the media center, they see the display with the live models. The models then tell the class about the book and movie Because of Winn-Dixie and about the other books available for them to check out. The students in that class become the live models for the next class, creating a chain of learning between all the students at our school. Student volunteers also model for the display during the mornings as students, parents and teachers visit the media center before school. Our display also includes books recommended for students who enjoyed Because of Winn-Dixie. The titles were recommended by fifth grade students who made their recommendations based on books with similar themes. The display includes a print bibliography of these recommendations for students to take with them. Our display has created a buzz of excitement about Because of Winn-Dixie at Sandymount!

St. John‘s 5th grade celebrates Winn-Dixie with a smile. Our “smilingest dog” contest turned out 3 live dogs and many stuffed friends for our live display. The standee was too tall for our library so we organized this live display at lunchtimes for our whole school to enjoy.
