Nim's Island — A Letter to Educators from Author Wendy Orr
Dear Educator,
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live all by yourself on an island, like Robinson Crusoe? When I was a kid visiting my grandparents, we used to go on a ferry past two tiny islands. They weren't much more than big rocks, but I kept imagining living on them and wrote a story about two orphans running away to live on "Spring Island." Many years later, when I was writing Nim's Island, I remembered how I'd felt then - and this book began to come to life.
I love Nim, who's as brave as I'd like to be, and I love Alex, who's more like I truly am; Fred, who's a lot like my dachshund, and Selkie and Jack... They're all very real to me, and one of the best things about being involved with the movie script has been the chance to live with these characters again. I am so excited about seeing them come to life!
Best,
Wendy Orr
