The film, based on the book of the same name, features Breslin as young Nim, a girl who has grown up on a tropical island. Gerard Butler plays the dual role of Nim's father and Alex Rover, a fictional adventurer from Nim's favorite book series. When her father goes missing, Nim tries to contact Alex Rover, unaware that the real Rover is an agoraphobic woman played by Jodie Foster.
