Walden Media acquires rights to develop story into feature film
July 18, 2007
LOS ANGELES (July 18, 2007)—Walden Media will produce a film set in the backdrop of Maverick’s, home to one of the largest and most dangerous surf breaks on the planet. Project is based on a treatment by Jim Meenaghan and Brandon Hooper, who will produce the film. Daniel Barnz and Ned Zeman will write the screenplay.
There are thrill-seekers in every sport, but only a few have the courage and knowledge to conquer the most extreme challenges. Nowhere is that truer than at Maverick’s, where winter swells pull in waves the size of five-story buildings. Based on a true story, teenager Jay Moriarity, under the guiding hand of local legend Rick “Frosty” Hesson, is about to brave the monstrous surf—for reasons even more powerful than Maverick’s itself .
Meenaghan is the executive vp of business and legal affairs at Walden Media and Hooper is an independent writer and producer. Walden Media executive vp of production Alex Schwartz will oversee the project on behalf of the company. Barnz and Zeman are represented by Endeavor.
