DAYTONA BEACH, FL / ORLANDO, FL - Reading for Relief is a student effort to support young victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Designed by sixth grade students at Chain of Lakes Middle School in partnership with The Children's Advocacy Center and Just Read!, Florida, Reading for Relief is a simple but powerful challenge empowering children of all ages to reach out through daily reading and help a child in need; Kids Helping Kids! Ms. Cheryl Hite-Scherer and her Chain of Lakes Middle School sixth grade students completed the first Reading for Relief project in the State in early November. An event will be held at Chain of Lakes Middle School in Orlando, Florida on Friday, November 18 to present a check for over $2500 to their project partner; The Children's Advocacy Center of Volusia & Flagler Counties, Inc., and showcase the books and letters that will be shared with young hurricane refugees across the Gulf Coast region. "I am so proud of the spirit of volunteerism shown by these students," said Maryann Barry, CEO of the Children's Advocacy Center. Cheryl Hite-Scherer is thrilled with the results of the project, "our students really embraced Reading for Relief, which was beautiful to see, as this project wasn't only about improving reading and learning new skills, but about applying those skills to make a difference." Please join The Children's Advocacy Center, Chain of Lakes Middle School and Just Read!, Florida as we celebrate the success of these students and challenge other schools to participate in the Reading for Relief program on November 18th at 10:00 a.m. at Chain of Lakes Middle School in Orlando, Florida.
Through their pledges, sponsors support students committed to making a difference through dedication, hard work, and academic growth. Sponsors are asked to make a per book pledge for each book read. Pledges are collected at the end of each participating school's campaign. With the help of the Children's Advocacy Center, funds collected will go directly to purchase educational items such as school supplies and books and comfort items such as clothing and teddy bears for displaced child hurricane victims throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Florida.
One of the books the class completed as part of their project was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. This book was chosen in conjunction with the Just Read!, Florida Statewide Book Read and events surrounding The Chronicles of Narnia. In order to bring the book to life, Ms. Hite-Scherer and her students transformed their classroom in to the Land of Narnia and have invited a lion cub rescued by Endangered Animal Rescue Sanctuary to join them at the celebration on Friday, November 18.
