FAYETTEVILLE, AK - When C. S. Lewis put pen to paper, he did not dream of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," being presented as a children's play, a book on tape, radio theater, or on the silver screen. In the beginning, it was a story written for his goddaughter, Lucy. Fayetteville Public Library partners with Walden Media to recognize the classic tale on the 55th anniversary of the publication by throwing a book party, Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 in the afternoon. Come dressed as a character, explore the land of Narnia, talk about a favorite part, learn more about author and theologian C. S. Lewis, see a trailer for the new movie.
The timeless tale opens with four children who leave war-torn London for safe haven in the country. In the historic house where they are staying, they discover an old wardrobe and with it another land. Today, over 60 million readers, children and adults, have been drawn through the wardrobe doors into Narnia with its mythical creatures, witches, talking animals and the struggle between good and evil. In mid-December, the book will be released as a movie directed by Andrew Adamson. Get ready for the movie release with the FPL book party. "Read it before you see it," children's librarian Lolly Greenwood said. "In fact, read all seven books in the Narnian series."
"We believe that the doors of a great library are like the wardrobe doors--they lead to adventures, stories and exotic lands that are almost limitless," said a Walden Media spokesperson. "This program is designed to remind kids and their parents what a precious resource the public library is." Teachers and home-schooling parents are invited to drop by the children's library desk for a free educator's guide compliments of Walden Media. Hurry, supplies are limited.
Saturday is library time. Invite a friend. Bring a copy of the "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," or check one out of the library. Pick-up a souvenir bookmark. Sign-up is requested, please, by phone or in person at the Children's Library desk. Need more information? Call 571-2222 ext. 4370.
