Tell us how you’re using technology
or social media to teach The Giver and win:
$1000 for yourself,
$1000 for your school,
$1000 for your local library and
a hometown screening of The Giver movie!
Teachers are some of the most important people in any society. They serve as gateways to knowledge, learning, and, someday, to wisdom. In honor of this noble calling, and in anticipation of the August 2014 film release, Walden Media is sponsoring a contest for educators to submit ideas on how to use technology and/or social media to teach The Giver and a chance to win $3,000 in prizes plus a hometown screening of the film!
The inspiration for this contest came from an idea we received from Lori Johnson, a middle school teacher at Lexington Christian Academy in Massachusetts. Building upon the theme of “precision of language” from the novel, Ms. Johnson asks her students to do a “Six Word Challenge” and use social media to write a story about The Giver in six words. We were inspired by how Ms. Johnson seamlessly integrates themes from the novel into a lesson plan using technology, so we want to hear how other educators are doing the same! Read her example submission here.
Submit your own unique idea for how to teach The Giver using technology below! Submissions are not limited, so enter as many ideas as you like. Walden will announce a winner every week, as determined by a panel of judges, based upon originality, creativity, and potential to engage students in equal parts.
Who is Eligible
Any full-time teacher, librarian (school or public), educational paraprofessional, district professional, after school leader, or registered home school parent.
The contest will launch on June 2 with winners announced June 6, June 13, June 20, and June 27. Submissions are rolling, so if you don’t win on June 6 you are still eligible to win on June 13. After June 27, Walden will post all four winners and their ideas, and there will be a vote on Walden.com for the best of the four. That overall winner will be announced July 18.
Winners and their ideas will be highlighted on the Walden website and in the Teacher Hall of Fame. Each winner will receive a personal cash prize of $1000, a $1000 donation to their school, and a $1000 donation to their local library. Homeschooling parents can choose an educational institution to donate to, as approved by a panel of judges.
The overall winner will get a free hometown screening of The Giver for their friends and family!
