When the Tooth Fairy Calls: How any Fairy Worth her Wings Celebrates a Lost Tooth

To your child, losing a baby tooth is perhaps the biggest event in his life to date. Not only does it mean he’s becoming a “big boy” but also lost teeth hold a certain cache in kindergarten and first grade classrooms – all the cool kids have been visited by the Tooth Fairy.

It’s such an important landmark in your child’s life, make it a special occasion full of fun and magic.

The Night Before the Tooth Fairy Visits:

  • Create a Tooth Case: “Let your child create a tooth case to put under her pillow case. Repurpose a mint tin – she can dress it up with paint, stickers, or a handwritten label,” (Parents Magazine, July 2009).
  • Register the Tooth: Register the lost tooth with the Office of the Tooth Fairy. You can purchase the Official Tooth Fairy kit online which comes with an embossed certificate to “keep record of name, age, tooth lost, method of extraction and compensation information.” The kit also comes with a silk-screened cotton bag to put the tooth in.
  • Play a Tooth Fairy Game: Help the Tooth Fairy find Lost Teeth with the Baby Teeth Castle Game. Colgate.com features fun games for kids 4-6 about the Tooth Fairy.
  • Recite a Tooth Fairy Poem: Before bed, teach your child the poem below inviting the Tooth Fairy to come visit:

In this pocket you will find
A teensy, tiny tooth of mine.
So while I sleep where
dreams are made,
Let’s see if you
can make a trade.

In this pocket I will lay,
the little tooth I lost today.
Please, dear fairy,
tonight as I sleep
leave me a coin.
My tooth you can keep.

During the Tooth Fairy’s Visit:

  • Tooth Fairy Footprints: Any fairy worth her wings will leave tiny glittery tracks in your child’s room. Sprinkle glitter or shiny confetti on the floor next to your child’s bed. (Parents Magazine, July 2009)
  • A Great Gift: While it is traditional for the Tooth Fairy to leave money in exchange for the lost tooth, mix it up a bit and leave a new toy, coloring books or stickers. (Parents Magazine, July 2009)
  • A Tooth Certificate: As an added bonus, the Tooth Fairy can leave a signed tooth certificate at your child’s place at the breakfast table. It extends the fun, and the Tooth Fairy magic into the next day.
