Watch! This morning on NBC’s The Today Show, Al Roker interviewed Newbery Honor Award winning author Ingrid Law and her daughter Andy about the novel SAVVY. SAVVY is Walden and Dial Books For Young Readers’ exciting novel about Mibs Beaumont who is about to become a teenager. As if that prospect weren’t scary enough, thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy strikes - and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, her savvy promises to be outrageous… and positively thrilling.
During the interview, Roker and his young “Book Club Kids” members spoke with Law about her inspirations for this magical American tale. Law explained “When I was thinking about writing a novel for young people, I thought there are so many great books already out there about magic that are based in a European or British tradition of magic, and I thought what would American magic look like? So I started looking at things like The Tall Tales to really get a sense of the perseverance, the love of home and family, the things that are really important to us here.”
When “Al’s Book Club Kid” member Treasure ask Law about what inspired her to write this novel, she said: “I wanted to write a book about magical children but never use the word magic because I wanted everyone to know that…[magic] belongs to everyone… it’s all inside us.”
Law also discussed the book’s setting and tone with the young readers. Law’s daughter Andy told Al Roker about the research road trip she and her mom took to the Heartland while writing the novel.
