Yesterday, Betsy Bird (Fuse #8) posted a list of the books she wishes she could have sent back in time for her child-self to read. It’s a delightfully fun concept. We were thrilled to read that she chose SAVVY by Ingrid Law as a book for her 10-year-old self.

We took a quick poll of the Walden offices asking the same question. Here are some of the books we wish we could have sent back in time:

  • Nim’s Island, Wendy Orr: I loved Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins when I was nine. Nim’s adventures are thrilling, exciting, and have that girl power I loved as a kid. (Jenna, Marketing)
  • Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins: The first book that comes to mind is The Hunger Games, and I would send it back to when I was about 12 or 13. I had trouble finding YA books I liked at that age, so by 7th grade I was reading mostly adult titles. By transitioning to the adult world of reading so quickly, I missed out on an amazing cache of novels that could have been important tools for me throughout my teenage years. A book like The Hunger Games might have changed that. (Kellie, Publishing)
  • Gulliver’s Travels, Jonathan Swift and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jeff Kinney: Every time I see these titles in the book store or in a library I always say to myself, “I need to read those…wish I read them as a kid.” There’s something that draws me to them, and really feel like I would have fully appreciated them when I was younger. (Eric, Creative Development)
  • Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger: I didn’t read Catcher in the Rye until my mid-twenties, but had I discovered as a young teen, I think it would have helped shape  my sense of humor at a younger age. (Greg, Legal)
