This week, there have been two new digital media announcements that teachers and parents can get behind.

Doodle 4 Google

Win a $15,000 college scholarship! Today Google announced its 3rd annual Doodle 4 Google Contest. Students grades K-12 can create their own unique version on the Google logo, and enter for a chance to win a $15,000 college scholarship, a laptop or other great prizes.

This year’s theme is “If I Could do Anything, I Would…” which encourages students to think and dream big.  A panel of expert jurors will evaluate the logo entries based upon this theme, grade band and region.

To participate, schools must register on or before March 17th, and logo entries are due March 31st. Individual children cannot register without the participation of their school, so encourage your school’s teachers and administrators to register right away. It’s free and easy.

Happy Designing!

Textbooks for iPad

The new iPad and tablet technologies could mean big advances in education. McGraw-Hill Cos., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Kaplan Publishing announced yesterday that all have signed a deal with developer ScrollMotion, Inc. to develop their textbook materials into mobile applications.

What does this mean for education?

The possibilities are vast: “People have been talking about the impact of technology on education for 25 years. It feels like it is really going to happen in 2010,” Rik Kranenburg, group president of higher education for the education unit of McGraw-Hill Cos. told the Wall Street Journal yesterday.

While it’s impossible to predict exactly how technology will change education, new portable tablet technology seems like the first viable option to bring e-textbooks into the mainstream. Students aren’t reading textbooks online right now, but the portable nature of products like the iPad may be a game-changer. Its interactive, easily updated format could greatly enhance the traditional learning experience.

What do you think? How will tablet and mobile technology change education?

Google books has been so useful for the researchers, im one of them. This could let me get concise information in a minute, no hours of scanning to do. See? This fascinates people of today, technology has ever been so useful for the students. I am not that sure if other sites would do the same. For an instant, the Please Rob Me.com, the people behind this are either incredibly funny or incredibly foolish.  The site, helmed by Boy von Amstel (sounds like an alias) et al, started the site to basically take pot shots at people who use too much Twitter – and sort of combined this obsession with Twitter-ing, and a game called FourSquare, in which people try to find other people using clues they broadcast.
