A study released online today reported young children in daycare watch more than double the amount of TV than other preschoolers.
Children in home-based settings watched significantly more TV on average than those in center-based daycares, according to the study “Preschool-Aged Children’s Television Viewing in Child Care Settings,” which will be published in the December issue of Pediatrics. Researchers surveyed 168 daycare programs in Michigan, Washington, Florida and Massachusetts. Ninety-four were home-based and 74 were center-based.
Prior studies, which researchers said are more than 20 years old, estimated that preschool children watch 2-3 hours of TV per day at home. The study found that among preschool-aged children, those in home-based daycares watched TV for an average of 2.4 hours per day, compared to 0.4 hours in center-based settings. Home-based programs where the staff had college degrees were closer to the center-based programs in the amount of time they used TV, researchers found.
