Read for the Record!

Help break a world reading record - Jumpstart, a non- profit children’s literacy program, is hosting its annual Read for the Record event October 8th, where 1 million adults and children will read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar in attempt to break a world record.

Last year, the group set a record with 700,000 people reading the same book on the same day. This year, they are trying to make the event even bigger than last, and break their own record.

Jumpstart encourages adults to share the joy of reading with a child. They believe that preschool is an essential time for children’s growth and development. Each year they engage 15,000 preschoolers in a year-long program where they are individually mentored and tutored by college students and community volunteers. Jumpstart believes this early and lasting help creates the intellectual foundations for later success.

To participate in the Read for the Record day and help this great organization, register online individually or as a class.  Pick up your own copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar at WalMart or the Jumpstart website at a special discounted rate. For every book purchased, the Pearson Foundation will make a donation to Jumpstart.

Can’t participate? Even if you can’t read on October 8th, Jumpstart encourages you to participate by sponsoring a family. For your $10 donation, Pearson Group will deliver a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to a family in need, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Jumpstart’s Reading at Risk program.

Happy readings!
