How much is one penny worth? In America, a penny may seem virtually worthless, but in Pakistan, it buys a young girl a pencil and opens a whole new world of education to her.
Greg Mortenson, mountaineer turned humanitarian, has dedicated his life to promote education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afganistan. He believes that even in the most war-torn, radical regions, you can promote peace through education. Where girls have never been allowed education, he believes that young women hold the key to changing an entire culture: if you educate a girl, you educate an entire village.
Mortenson’s incredible success makes him one of the most inspiring and innovative humanitarians of our day. Edutopia is offering an insider’s look at Mortenson’s amazing work through a webinar especially for students and educators.
Mortenson will discuss his program Pennies for Peace with Edutopia’s Suzie Boss. Pennies for Peace is a service-learning program that makes a positive global impact, one penny at a time. Students learn about the region, Mortenson’s work, and help make a difference through penny drives. The program offers curriculum linked to standards with an assessment tool; an implementation guide; fact sheets; printable maps, postcards, stickers & poster components; remarkable videos and much more!
Participate in the webinar as a classroom activity, student assembly or if you are curious to learn more about the program. Hurry space is limited.
