I see so many parents taking their child’s health for granted. I go into a family’s home and see garbage food in the cabinets and the parents immediately say “Oh, I don’t eat that. It’s for the kids.” As though because they are young they are immune to disease. This is so absurd to me. The percentage of overweight and obese kids and teens has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Today’s children represent the first generation with a lower life expectancy then their parents. They are suffering from diabetes, fatty liver disease, and setting themselves up for heart disease, cancer, hypertension and all that other really bad stuff later on in life.
Beyond the obvious health benefits like stronger bones, faster metabolism, and disease prevention, fitness gives kids a better outlook on life. Kids that exercise are better able to handle emotional challenges. They are more focused in school. And their self-esteem soars.
Instead of harping on and assigning blame for this growing pandemic, let’s be pro-active and discuss what we CAN do to make a difference in our children’s lives. The first step starts with you. Lead by example. A parent is their child’s primary role model. By making your health a priority you set a healthy example that your little one can emulate throughout the rest of their life. This means keeping healthy foods in the house. Making fitness a fun integral part of your daily routine. Teaching your kids how to shop for healthy foods and how to make healthy choices when eating out. Go for a nature hike with them. Play a game of catch. Engage in a wii fit challenge. Make fitness a part of family time.
Educate your kids. They are so much smarter then we often give them credit for. Show them the benefits of healthy living by pointing out examples to them like their favorite athlete or movie star – use their heroes as examples of people who take good care of themselves.
Don’t be afraid to be the parent. Set boundaries and rules for your kids. They crave structure and are looking to you to provide it. Limit the amount of sedentary activities your child participates in on a daily basis to 2 hours a day. This means tv, computer, video games etc. Supervise their food choices. Limit their exposure to junk food and teach them that treat foods are special occasion foods to be enjoyed in moderation.
One important parting thought. Never make an issue of your child’s weight.
Be self aware and do not project your own insecurities on to your kid. Many parents feel like their child is a reflection on them and so they become overly critical and concerned. No matter what, do not ostracize your child or make an issue of their weight or image. Kids interpret your “concern” as criticism. This can make them feel not good enough and cause them to rebel. Always use love and positive reinforcement to help your child make a healthy change.”
