Today marks the first annual National Day of Writing. A Senate resolution was passed on October 8th naming today, October 20th the National Day of Writing.
In celebration of the proliferation of writing brought on by blogging, texting, IMing and personal journalism, the National Council of Teachers of English worked to create a day to share, discuss and encourage writing in all its forms.
NCTE has created a National Gallery of Writing where anyone in the country can submit writing in whatever form it takes. Schools, churches or other groups are welcome to create their own local gallery within the gallery so that all of their work can be showcased together. As NCTE hopes this will be the beginning of a celebration of writing, the gallery is open for submissions until June 10, 2010, so there is still time to participate.
The New York Times Learning Network has also created a great companion lesson plan about internet conversations called “Care to Comment? Considering Internet Discussion Protocol.” It’s insightful, relevant, standards-based and perfect for grades 6-12.
Happy Writing!
