Can Halloween costumes be too scary? The New York Times posted an article today about how schools throughout the country are creating strict guidelines to for appropriate Halloween costumes.
In the article, Tom Hernandez, a spokesman for District 202 in Plainfield, Ill, a district that has encouraged their students to dress as historical figures, vegetables, or foods rather than witches, vampires or zombies, says: “We’re balancing a tradition here with the times we live in.”
Halloween, which has its roots in Pagan traditions of warding off evil spirits, witches and fairies on the eve of All Souls Day, is almost synonymous with scares and spooks. Obviously Halloween has evolved from its early roots, but should the tradition of scary costumes lives on?
We want to hear from you – do the “times” we live in change the holiday as Hernandez says? What do you think? Answer the survey below, or write your thoughts in the comment section.
