Award-Winning Author Frank Cottrell Boyce Adapting Acclaimed Novel Cosmic For Walden Media

LOS ANGELES, (May 2010) – Walden Media will produce a film version of the critically acclaimed children’s novel COSMIC and the award-winning author, screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce (Danny Boyle’s MILLIONS) will adapt his novel for the big screen.

This original comedy follows the adventures of a boy who, after going through an early growth spurt, is frequently mistaken for an adult.  When he poses as his best friend’s father in order to win a seat on an experimental spaceship ride, he becomes more of a man than he ever imagined as he saves the crew from a journey gone awry.

“The hero of Cosmic is a boy who goes further away from Earth than any human being has ever been, but his big discoveries are all about family and home.  That mix of fantastic adventure and emotional truth is what Walden is all about. Working on the book with Walden felt like coming home to me,” said author and screenwritercreenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce.

“Frank has created one of the most original characters in recent memory with the book’s hero, Liam.  In order to preserve his wildly funny and unique voice, we’re thrilled to be working with Frank to develop the film adaptation that will appeal to the whole family.” Michael Bostick, CEO Walden Media.

Shortlisted for the prestigious UK Carnegie Award COSMIC is the latest release from Walden Pond Press, a joint venture between Walden Media and Harper Collins. The imprint publishes books for young readers; pairs book properties with filmmakers and actors; and collaborates on the development and production of motion pictures based on select book titles.

“Cosmic is one of the best reviewed books of the year and the type of magical, cinematic tale that lends itself to film.  In short, the story is Apollo 13 meets Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, so it makes sense that Cosmic’s out-of-this world adventure would include a journey to the movie theater.”  Francis X. (“Chip”) Flaherty, Jr., Publisher Walden Pond Press.

Walden’s Evan Turner, VP of Production & Development will oversee the project with Michael Bostick.
