There are 27 million slaves in the world today - more than at any other time in history. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true.
Most Americans believe slavery ended when America abolished it over 150 years ago, but modern day slavery and human-trafficking is an epidemic. Walden explored this issue with the release of our film AMAZING GRACE. Inspired by William Wilberforce, we launched The Amazing Change Campaign to help end this modern day slavery. We collected over 120,000 signatures on petition calling to abolish slavery. Our signatures joined those of StopTheTraffik’s 1.5 million, and were presented to the UN’s Global Initiative to Fight Trafficking (UNGIFT).
Today, Mashable posted an exclusive interview with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, who have launched a campaign of their own to help abolish a form of child slavery called restavec in Haiti. They believe that while the UN will look to send $11 billion dollars to the Haitian government for reconstruction, it is imperative that the Haitian economy be rebuilt without this form of child slavery.
Kutcher said to Mashable: “Let’s support the Haitian people, but let’s support them the right way, and let’s support all of them; don’t forget about the 300,000 children that are enslaved.”
Haiti is just one of the places where Kutcher and Moore are working to end slavery. Watch the video below where Moore discusses sex workers in this country.
