Are you Ready for Some Football? Super Bowl Lessons and Crafts

Are you ready for some football? We bet your students are. With the biggest game in professional football just five days away, channel that enthusiasm into productive, standards-based learning.

Use one or all of these excellent lesson plans to prepare for the big game:

Grades K-2

• Football Centerpiece, Kaboose.com: This cute craft will make a great take-home for younger students.

Grades 3-5

• Two Minute Drill by Mike Lupica: Encourage your students to read Mike Lupica’s Two Minute Drill from the Comeback Kids series. Discuss the themes of football, sportsmanship and team present in the book.

• Football Fill-in, New York Times Learning Network: This fill-in-the-blank worksheet corresponds to a New York Times article about the rarity of two number one teams meeting in the Super Bowl.
• The Super Bowl Brand, New York Times Learning Network: This lesson asks students to study and critique the Super Bowl logos throughout the years. Students discuss the historical and technological advances that contributed to each year’s unique design.

Grades 6-8

• Commercial Success, New York Times Learning Network: Students critique two commercials from the Super Bowl, and discuss the themes, goals and success of each one.
• Touchdown Decisions, Science Netlinks: In this lesson, students listen to a Science Update podcast about the math and statistics behind professional football coaches’ play-calling, and think critically about how and if coaches call plays that maximize their success.
