Al Roker Picks SAVVY for his Book Club

The Today Show’s Al Roker announced this morning that he has selected Ingrid Law’s Newbery Honor Winning book SAVVY as his next Al’s Book Club for Kids pick.

Published by Walden Media and Dial Books for Young Readers, SAVVY is the story of Mibs Beaumont who is about to become a teenager. As if that prospect weren’t scary enough, thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy strikes - and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, her savvy promises to be outrageous… and positively thrilling. But just before the big day, Poppa is in a terrible accident. Suddenly, Mibs’s dreams of X-ray vision disappear: All she wants now is a savvy that will save Poppa. In fact, Mibs is so sure she’ll get that powerful savvy that she sneaks a ride to the hospital aboard a rickety bus - with her siblings and the preacher’s kids in tow.
But when the bus starts heading in the wrong direction only one thing is certain: After this extraordinary adventure, not a soul on that bus will ever be the same.

Walden is thrilled that SAVVY has been selected. Since it was started in 2007, Al’s Book Club picks have become synonymous with outstanding children’s literature. Our friend, President and Publisher of Dial Books for Young Readers, Lauri Hornik, put it best when she said “Al Roker has such perfect taste!  All of our hopes for the fabulous SAVVY have now come true with this exciting news, and we couldn’t be happier.”

Al’s book club was created as a way to get kids to keep reading and not experience the “summer slide.” With each book he selects, he makes reading an immersive experience by giving young readers the opportunity to discuss the book directly with its author. In fact, Ingrid Law will appear on the show later this summer to be interviewed by her young fans.

Not only is SAVVY an award-winning book, but it’s soon to be a major motion picture from Walden.
